Powerless

You feel out of control from trying to control things. You see people happily eating at restaurants and wish you could sit down to a meal like that, but when you sit down to eat, your mind starts racing, “I am going to eat too much? Am I going to lose control? Can other people see that I’ve lost control?”

You look over at the other’s plate to see how much they’ve eaten to make sure you’re still eating like a normal person. You want to eat more, but you won’t allow to food take control of you here. So you decide that when you get home, you will let yourself eat all that you want. You feel terrible for feeling like this.

You find yourself rigidly counting calories and food portions. You detest eating out with others because you want to control all of the ingredients that go into your body. You can’t stand the way it feels in your body or your clothes if you eat more than you planned. When a friend calls you and asks you to eat dinner out, your heart pounds and you think, “Should I bring my own food? Should I look at the menu first? How am I going to manage the calories?”

Looking in a mirror is hell. All you see are your flaws, all the things you hate about yourself. It’s a huge magnifying glass that zeros in all of your unflattering parts. You see your friends on social media and they look so happy, fit, and healthy. Shame fills you to your core.

Self-Acceptance

Meet Tristin McDermott, RMHCI

Tristin McDermott is a Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern specializing in eating disorder treatment. Struggling with an eating disorder can feel overwhelming, but healing is possible. Tristin helps clients rebuild trust in their bodies, break free from rigid food rules, and develop a healthier relationship with eating and self-image. Using DBT, CBT, ACT, EMDR, and somatic work, she creates a supportive space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered.

Tristin helps clients challenge harmful narratives, navigate triggers, and cultivate self-compassion. She brings warmth and levity into therapy, making it easier to explore difficult topics in a way that feels inviting and supportive. After working with her, clients move from shame and self-judgment to self-trust and balance—finding a greater sense of peace, freedom, and fulfillment in their lives.
